Hold an event

Events held during Adult Learners' Week allow employers to show their commitment to staff development as well as contribute to business objectives. Research shows that improving the skills of a work force contributes to a lower staff turnover, higher levels of morale, and improved staff competence and productivity.

Adult Learners' Week receives significant media coverage and events linked to the brand benefit from being associated with the national campaign and its publicity. This provides opportunities for organisations to raise their profile, build new partnerships and to engage new audiences.

Holding an event or taster session for Adult Learners' Week is an excellent way to encourage colleagues to improve skills and increase their confidence and motivation. There are a wide range of resources to help you engage employees with ease and cost effectiveness.

Examples of past workplace events include:

  • asking local colleges, community centres or gyms to provide tasters of their classes, in anything from art to kickboxing;
  • celebrating cultural diversity through exchanges of food and languages; and
  • encouraging 'skill swapping', where employees share their interests with colleagues, such as IT skills, languages or sports.
