Workplaces across Yorkshire and the Humber take part in Adult Learners’ Week

Yorkshire and the Humber
27 Jul 2010

With events held by 92 different workplaces throughout Yorkshire and the Humber there were lots of opportunities for employees to learn something new during Adult Learners’ Week.

Learning at Work Day Event at Barnetby railway station

Unionlearn received applications for funding from 15 separate unions with events scheduled across 3 weeks from 10th May to 28th May 2010. Bids were received from the far reaches of the region and from a wide spectrum of workplaces ranging from Northallerton Job Centre Plus in the north to The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield in the South.

Highlights of activities included a joint event held by the RMT and TSSA over at Barnetby. Their Learning at Work Day event was held over two days and was particularly successful with over 100 people per day gaining access to learning in some format. Barnetby railway station is located between Scunthorpe and Grimsby just off the A18 and held learning events in the shape of ITQ bespoke taster sessions, Skills for life taster sessions, a safe motorcycle course and demo and even a live cooking demonstration which attracted a lot of attention.

Another activity which also warrants a special mention was the event held by First Hull Trains at Europa House, Hull. This event marked the opening of a brand new learning centre on 20th May 2010 with Nigel Richardson, Deputy Chief Executive at Hull City Council and the council’s lead on education and lifelong learning, cutting the ribbon to officially launch the new facility.

The new learning centre had been supported by ASLEF and the RMT, unionlearn with Yorkshire and the Humber and East Riding College – all of which were represented at the opening ceremony. Other events were held at organisations such as United Biscuits, Royal Mail and Primark, and it is estimated that thousands of employees across the region took part in some kind of activity.
