Wanting to write a book but feeling she had inadequate reading and writing skills, Margaret has been attending a Skills for Life Literacy course for the past three years, achieving Level 1 and now working towards Level 2.
“Whenever I was writing something I always wrote in ‘Geordie’ and I wanted to be able to correct my grammar,” recalled Margaret. “I don’t like long words and my tutor really supported me to gain confidence in my writing ability. She was always very patient.” Margaret’s dedication and attendance at literacy classes for three years meant she learned sentence structure and grammar, enabling her to complete her first book and see it published in December 2009. She is now close to completing her second book.
“Margaret is extremely proud of her achievement and increased reading ability, which is well deserved,” said Julie Harding, Skills for Life Development Officer at Durham County Council. “Margaret’s drive and determination to achieve her goal has certainly become a reality.”
