Amy King

Young Adult Learner of the Year National Award
London

Despite suffering ill-health which meant Amy missed years of schooling, and being told she would never amount to anything and that pure science ‘wasn’t for girls’, Amy is now studying a Masters Degree in Chemistry. She also runs her own charity, volunteers with lower-set and SEN children, and is on track to realise her ambition of becoming a science teacher or researcher.

Living with hyper-mobility syndrome, Amy had to prepare for her GCSEs while undergoing intensive and painful surgery. Home schooled for years and predicted low GCSE grades, Amy surprised everyone when her hard work saw her achieve As and Bs. She began studying for her A-levels but her teachers’ lack of faith in her led Amy to leave and undertake independent study. After achieving an A in Mathematics through self-education, Amy went to study science A-levels at Bromley College.

As well as achieving two As and a B in these exams, Amy threw herself into student life and used her passion for science to support and inspire others. She started a blog (The Life and Times of a Chemistry Nerd) and even set up her own charity – GlamSci – to encourage other young women to get into science.

Amy is now studying for a Masters Degree in Chemistry at Greenwich University. She says “My time at Bromley College helped me in so many ways – giving me back my confidence and bringing me closer to achieving my dream. The work I do now greatly inspires me to help girls who have had the same experiences as me, to become not just doctors and nurses, but successful individuals.”
