Alan Taylor
Having spent 18 years rising through the ranks in the army, Alan Taylor was forced to retire due to arthritis. He tried his hand at various jobs from sales to working as a postman, but was never satisfied, so he decided to return to learning about 10 years ago and now has a raft of qualifications under his belt, enabling him to embark on a whole new career.
Alan, 62, began his learning journey at Loughborough College with an Access to Higher Education course alongside GCSEs in English and Maths, and achieved both with excellent results. These led to Alan achieving a BA (Hons) degree in Archaeology and Ancient History at Leicester University.
Alan has now become a lecturer at Loughborough College. He said, “I respect my students and thoroughly enjoy inspiring them to ‘learn to love learning’, in the way that I did. I help them to find a sense of self-worth as well as embark on a lifelong learning approach to their careers. I regularly work with students who need a gentle push in the right direction to help them reach their potential, and this is so worthwhile.”
Alan has continued his learning development by completing City & Guilds Stage 1 and Stage 2 in delivering learning. He’s currently studying a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and planning to study for a Masters Degree in Mediterranean Archaeology in 2010.
“I never fail to be grateful for getting a second chance in learning and can confidently say that I will always be looking to broaden my knowledge in any way that I can.”
