Brenda Cumming
Brenda Cumming, 63, initially started attending adult learning classes in order to meet new people. Now she has completed more than 35 different courses since 2005, including IT, silk painting, psychology, sign language, accountancy, family law and a Level 2 in Literacy.
Brenda had no previous qualifications when she started attending Bridge Women’s Education and Training Centre in Tyne and Wear, but was keen to learn as much as possible. Initially scared of computers, she overcame her fear and threw herself into a range of IT courses and gained her first qualifications.
As she progressed, she grew in confidence and gained the OCR Clait qualification and the European Computer Driving Licence at Level 2. Whilst exploring other options to continue learning, Brenda realised her literacy and numeracy let her down, so she began programmes in both which she has now completed.
“I went to Bridge and discovered there was so much available for me,” said Brenda. “I did lots of courses, I have achieved lots of qualifications at different levels, and I’ve made so many good friends.”
“I don’t believe in saying ‘I can’t’, and my thirst to learn more is what’s kept me going, even when I’ve been in pain. Learning makes me feel better both mentally and physically.”
In her spare time, Brenda now volunteers at Bridge and helps support other learners. She says, “Taking up learning has broadened my horizons and has made me realise that I can be of use.”
