Mary Jarvis

Senior Learner of the Year Award
East of England

Mary’s determination to improve herself by learning at her workplace has seen her career blossom. She joined the NHS as a cleaner when she was 36 and has since taken every opportunity to develop herself by learning essential work skills, such as patient care, observation, health and safety, anatomy and physiology, irrigation and communication skills.

It was when Mary was working as a Theatre Orderly three years ago that she became enthusiastic about clinical activities and she had such a good rapport with patients and staff that she was transferred to the recovery area.

In spite of being partially sighted, Mary, now 55, has achieved NVQ Level 2 in Care, NVQ Level 3 in General Healthcare, is currently studying for NVQ Level 3 in Perioperative Care and is now working as a Perioperative Assistant. Mary has also taken time to improve her literacy and is currently learning computer skills.

Mary said, “I wanted to learn because I wanted to better myself. Now, I enjoy a more responsible and interesting job. Learning has boosted my confidence, given me a focus and made me feel more worthy. Learning has given me a career rather than just a job.” “She has proved herself to become a respected and valued team member,” said Bev Smith, who nominated Mary. “She is now doing a job she never would have dreamed possible and is doing it very well.”
