Michelle Burgoyne

European Social Fund Regional Awards
Yorkshire and the Humber

Two years ago, Michelle Burgoyne did not have a job or any formal qualifications. She has since completed GCSE Maths and English, is halfway through an Access Course at Harrogate College, and is hoping to go to university in September.

Michelle has two children and she cares for her husband who has mental health issues. Michelle has been able to regain her confidence through her new learning experiences and is working towards becoming a social worker.

Originally referred to The Carers Resource in Harrogate to help her find a job, she realised that she wanted a career. Low in confidence and anxious about returning to learning, she persevered with a 30-mile round trip – twice a week – to get to her classes, becoming an inspiration to other carers along the way.

“I have done this as I wanted to do something for myself for a change and I realised that I would have to be the breadwinner. My learning has opened a lot of doors for me,” said Michelle.

Nominator Stella Elson describes how “along her learning journey, she has met each barrier head on and overcome them. Her family are very supportive and give Michelle the encouragement she needs.”

Passing her exams has also given her the confidence to take and pass her driving test, enabling her family to have days out together and her children to undertake social activities. Learning has even helped Michelle to stop smoking.

“I am very proud of myself for my achievements. My learning has opened a lot of doors for me.”
