When Mark relocated to Bournemouth in 2006, he decided to reclaim his life by going into rehab to battle his alcohol and drug dependence. He was so determined to succeed that he joined the Outreach programme at his local college and completed his Progress and Directions courses.

Mark was overwhelmed by the support and guidance that was made available to him at college so he decided to continue learning and has taken on a Teacher Training course. His long-term goal of becoming a teacher is to ‘ultimately help others’. He demonstrates his desire to pass on what he has learnt, by helping other learners at his college and by committing himself to local self-help groups. At the same time, Mark has successfully completed two teaching placements and has acted as a ‘study buddy’ to other learners.

It’s a challenge finding a balance between his studies and his ongoing recovery, but Mark’s tutor is impressed because Mark ‘has not let the problems of his past hold him back’. Mark says ‘Learning has given me purpose’.
